Ray Floro Essential Kalis Ilustrisimo

FINALLY!!!!! Ray Floro’s THE ESSENTIAL KALIS ILUSTRISIMO

A new video (just under 2 hours) taking you through the fundamentals of Kalis Ilustrisimo.

Filmed in one of Ray Floro’s Instructor Accreditation seminars

The great GrandMaster Antonio “Tatang” Ilustrisimo moved with such efficiency and subtlety; it was hard to discern exactly what he was doing.

The Essential Kalis Ilustrisimo breaks down the system to SEVEN CORE PRINCIPLES.

These 7 Core Principles are explained in step by step detail. It will give you the ability to break down the GrandMaster’s movement so you can understand the moves.

These 7 Core principles will then be the foundation for further variations and future videos to unlock the Kalis Ilustrisimo System

Ray Floro

Raymond developed Floro Fighting Systems (FFS)  -  a realistic, simplified method of dealing with armed and unarmed confrontations and specialising in the awareness and defence of edged weapon assaults.

By discussing and formulating formal training programs and teaching guidelines, FFS has now been adopted by military personnel and law enforcement worldwide. Several Law Enforcement and “SWAT” personnel have also chosen to use the principles in their training academy.

Regular clients receive private lessons, their professions ranging from – Office Workers, Security Personnel, Air Marshalls, Commercial Pilots, Business Owners, Military Instructors and personnel, other Martial Arts Instructors.

Raymond was also the “Training Leader” for the US based “Guardian Angels” Safety Patrol. Raymond formulated and taught a training regime suitable for recruits to use in the submission and arrest of offenders in the enclosed spaces of trains.  He also led patrols throughout the subway network and “streets”.

Floro Fighting Systems is a system of Edged Weapon combat and defence that is not only simple to learn, but is one of the most effective systems of self defence available today.  Efficient, direct and immediate, FFS is one of the very few styles that is still based on the blade, and is used by civilians and members of the military, and law enforcement agencies worldwide.

TLDR: Get it! - Anyone looking for a sword system with a solid conceptual framework backed up with tested training progressions. - FMA folks interested in KI who might be turned off by the "classical" approach. - HEMA folks looking for more context; short swords with no (or minimal) guards and an emphasis on leading, voids, angles, and counter-cuts. I've had a love/hate relationship with Filipino Martial Arts since I was a kid. I didn't like my Dad's and my Uncle Tony's approach because I believed it wasn't fancy enough. Later, what I thought was more sophisticated just wound up falling apart under pressure. It wasn't until training with Rene Latosa at various times in my 20's that I started to appreciate the straightforward. Raymond Floro's approach is pure sophisticated simplicity. I first read about him in Mark V. Wiley's Filipino Martial Culture. There was a passing reference to his first instructor being a certain Tony Dedal. I thought this might be the same person as my Uncle Tony. Ray later confirmed it was indeed. Because of this, and after endorsements from folks I knew, Jerry Wetzel and Michael Jen, I started pestering him online. I'm a bit embarrassed, but I don't regret it. I'm extremely grateful for his patience and generosity. And I'm more than proud that he's allowed me to run an FFS Study Group within my HEMA Club. The course is short but comprehensive. Seven lessons built around seven moves. Each builds on the other. He covers not only the What to do, but the When, Why, and Where (distance). Even the Introduction and Conclusion contain useful information. There's more than enough there for years of training. After what was probably my fifth binge-watch of the series, I sat down to take notes. Then I noticed Ray kind enough to provide a printable study-guide. Little things like that just add to the value. The Who (not the Mod-fathers) is also discussed. Antonio "Tatang" Ilustrisimo, Ray's teacher, was a nearly legendary Eskrimador. While Ray's respectful, he's not name dropping. He's lending context to help people see what's going on in the Ilustrisimo footage floating around the internet. His coaching style is personable. It's very easy to stay engaged. He's even slipped in some FMA and HEMA jokes. Ray deals with issues with the techniques as they come up -- not before. A sign of an excellent coach. Thankfully, its companion work, The Essential Ray Floro, is "back in print". The two complement each other very well. Glad it's back. Brilliant stuff overall. The Club getting Ray over here to the San Francisco Bay Area is more of a priority than ever.
